Business Meeting Topic:

Prompt Payment Legislation:  CIPH and MCA Canada support the need for Prompt Payment provisions at the federal level.  Senator Don Plett has been working closely with our associations and will talk about the importance of governments and industry working collaboratively and will talk in depth about the Canada Prompt Payment Act, providing an update on the status of the bill and highlight the important next steps for the prompt payment movement in Canada.

 

 

Speaker Bio:

  Don Plett grew up in Landmark, Manitoba, a small town of 900 people at the longitudinal centre of Canada.  Archie Plett, Don’s father, started Landmark Mechanical, a plumbing, heating and ventilation company in 1957.  In 1987, Don took over the company from his father and built a strong foundation for the family business.  Two of his sons seamlessly took over the business from Don in 2007.


Don has been active in politics since age 15, volunteering on and eventually running numerous successful campaigns.  He served as President of the Alliance Party of Canada, before working tirelessly to merge the two Conservative parties and later becoming the first President of the Conservative Party of Canada.  To this day, he remains the longest serving President of a conservative party in Canadian history.


Don was appointed to the Senate in 2009 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  Since his appointment, Don has been an active member and deputy chair of several Senate committees, including, but not limited to:  National security and Defence, Veterans Affairs, and currently remains on:  Agriculture and Forestry, Legal and Constitutional Affairs and Transport and Communications.  Don is known for taking a strong stance on issues that he is passionate about, some which include:  the protection of children, supporting Canadian farmers, religious freedom, fair democratic processes, and issues facing the trades and construction industry.


Don has been happily married to his wife Betty for 48 years.  They have four sons and 12 grandchildren.
