CHC Strat Plan Focused on Demand and Growth

In the fall, the Canadian Hydronics Council initiated a strategic planning process.   The goal of this plan is to recalibrate our intent based on current market forces and internal capabilities.  

 

This process was a collaborative effort. The Council represents several relevant manufacturers but to fully understand and appreciate the current state of the industry and where it needs to go we collected feedback from across the country, from CIPH members, certified designers & installers, and installer members to try and be as well rounded in perspective as possible.

 

This feedback was ultimately shared with a group of more than 30 industry members who probed the same questions and concerns through a facilitated discussion.   Key to making this process a success is not only identifying the right goals but understanding the Council’s capacity to achieve them.  This in person meeting forced the Council to look inward and outward at the current and future market forces influencing our industry.

  

The outcome of this process is a plan moving forward that will focus on key areas critical to a healthy and profitable hydronics industry for all participants. These are consensus targets where success will create benefits for all industry members, from product manufacturers through wholesale distributors to installers in the field.

 

The key tenets of the strategic plan are:

 

Advocacy - Being more proactive to make sure that new regulations give hydronic heating, and cooling, the opportunity to play an important role in our new paradigm of energy efficiency policies - this includes strengthening our region hydronics committees as advance warning systems for programs and policies that can negatively impact industry progress, pushing for policies that increase fairness in competition and  where possible shaping policies that enhance opportunities for growth.   

 

Influence - Getting closer to those who can make hydronic heating systems more accessible to groups, such as homeowners, by engaging home builders and architects, who are often barriers in presenting the option to end users – this includes actively engaging both groups to break down the artificial obstacles they create though incomplete understanding of the benefits of hydronic systems, their versatility, and their ability to increase profitability.

 

Education & Training- Creating more demand for higher level training by encouraging regulators to mandate certification for design and installation. As advocacy and influence create more demand the Council needs to work simultaneously to ensure a rise in the competence and reliability of installs – this means targeting provincial regulators and gaining agreement that regulatory enforcement should be more focused on increasing the competency of installation and not focused on protection of legacy practitioners.   

 

Marketing & Outreach – Making it easier for key demographics to easily understand the benefits of hydronics and its flexibility while also demystify assumptions about application limitations – this means making it easy for potential users to easily understand the simplicity of hot water heating, the adaptability it provides for both cost saving and benefit maximization, plus the amazing add on value of things like snow melt systems.  

  

These strategic focuses are important commitments to assure that hydronics is given the opportunity to prove its worth as the energy efficient, versatile solution for the future. Hydronic heating systems provide maximum efficiency, and comfort, but have never achieved the profile those claims deserve. With a renewed emphasis and more deliverables to help key constituencies understand the advantages we expect to stimulate demand.

 

We are living in a complex world where we must balance the need for efficiency with both comfort and cost. The simple science behind hydronics, the amazing capacity of water to carry heat, is poised to be in demand as it balances these demands effectively.

 

For decades hydronics has been crowded by less expensive but less efficient alternatives that often don’t provide what people really want - COMFORT. Now is the time to take advantage of new market dynamics to shift towards solutions that are focused on performance not compromise.  

 

The Canadian Hydronics Council is excited about the opportunity for industry growth in the future.  Under the leadership of chairman Dave Hughes, and the Council, it will spearhead positive change in the Canadian hydronics marketplace.
