Jerry Boulanger

Jerry Boulanger graduated from Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology in 1975 and immediately joined the mechanical construction industry as an equipment supplier. Although his firm sold a wide range of HVAC and plumbing products, as his career progressed he developed a strong interest in hydronics and began to provide training sessions for local customers and industry groups. In 2001 he expanded that part of his business and has since conducted training programs on a wide range of hydronic system topics to mechanical contractor’s associations, ASHRAE, CIPH, and others across Canada and in the U.S. He also provides technical services such as system analysis and troubleshooting.

He is a Past-President of both the Saskatoon and Regina Chapters of ASHRAE, Past-President of the Mechanical Contractors’ Association of Saskatchewan (MCAS), a Life Member of ASHRAE, and an Honourary Life Member of MCAS. Jerry has been semi-retired since 2013 and lives in Regina, SK.

Hydronic System Basics

This presentation covers the basics of why we use hydronics and all the standard components in any closed loop hydronic system.

It also covers some important related topics. Attendees should leave with a good basic understanding of what is required to put

together a properly functioning hydronic system. They should also be able to identify problems in existing not properly functioning systems.

Topics covered include:

Hydronic system advantages, Heat loss calculations

Basic components:

Boilers, Air separation, Expansion tanks, System pressurization

Circulating pumps, Heat transfer devices (emitters), Basic Controls

Piping layouts:

Direct return, Reverse return, Primary-secondary, Balancing, Glycol, Troubleshooting tips

A working demo system will be used to help illustrate various points.
