Winter 2016

Message from the Chairman

Outside my window the first few flakes of snow are falling ushering in the winter season. Warm and comfortable inside, I'm reminded of the important role our industry plays in the manufacture and supply of products that create comfortable living conditions for all Canadians - something we can all be proud of. It is a privilege to serve as your Chairman for 2016/2017 and my first five months have been enjoyable, busy and productive. In an effort to foster stronger bonds I have committed to travel to, and meet with, all nine CIPH Regions and attend as many allied association conferences as time will allow.

How clean is your data? Does it even matter?

If you can't answer the first question, we probably know your answer to the second.

Though the plumbing industry is still based onpersonal selling, the future is coming, making your data one of your most precious resources. It is the platform upon which your business is built and is critical to the availability and sale of your products. As businesses and our customers embrace e-commerce, clean, accurate data becomes even more important.

For the past year, CIPH has been learning about how members treat their data. Some use sophisticated applications to share, check and correct data while others manually maintain databases, fixing mistakes only as they arise.

How data is maintained and shared is important, but the most critical part of data management is accuracy. Because every time it isn't, there may be sales lost or margin drained from the transaction. That is why real time data management has become so valuable.

CIPH is studying data management and whether a data management service might be of use to our membership. At this stage we are still trying to learn more about our members' needs, their current investments in programs and personnel, and their general outlook on data management.

Over the next months, the IT Committee will survey the membership on this important subject. Help us help you to figure out how best to manage your data.
