The Annual meeting of the Canadian Advisory Council on Plumbing (CACP) was held in Saskatoon on August 13 & 14, 2018. The CACP acts in an advisory capacity to participating accredited organizations on matters pertaining to standards and conformity assessment programs affecting plumbing. It provides a forum for industry, provincial/territorial regulators, and product certification organizations to share new concepts and ideas, to discuss policy and programs, and to review innovations and new technologies that affect plumbing standards, and the certification and testing of plumbing products.

CIPH’s Plumbing & Mechanical Advisory Council (PMAC) is an active participant representing the interests of CIPH members and the industry at large. Agenda items included provincial regulatory updates including proposed flow and flush rates for fixture and fittings, climate change adaptation, tri-national harmonization of standards, water line sizing, water reclamation/reuse, and requirements for cross discipline efficiency. Discussion on timely adoption of the National Plumbing Code was one of the major highlights of the meeting. It has been noted that the timely adoption and implementation by provinces and territories of national codes is variable and certain jurisdictions take a much longer time to harmonize with the national code.  However, there is provincial and national desire for timely adoption. To allow timely referencing of standards into regulation, a desire to adopt new versions of standards into the Code as they are published was stated. Furthermore, PMAC will seek to get an update on all previously pending Code Change Requests which have been submitted to the National Research Council.

The current position of all Canadian provinces with respect to adoption and enforcement of the National Plumbing Code from 2010 and 2015 along with their future steps is summarized here.
