Ralph Suppa, CIPH President & General Manager, was recently elected as the Chair of the Association Executives Council on the NAW Board of Directors. Below is a copy of the speech that Ralph Suppa made at his appointment.

"Deborah Hamlin – On behalf of all Association Executive Council (AEC) members thank you for leading a successful term as Chair of the NAW AEC . We admire your leadership skills and thank you for the commitment you have made to serve us. Thank you for your insights you brought as a leading member of the irrigation industry and as an association executive – it definitely has made you a valued member of the NAW Board of Executives. In light of your work/life balance story you shared with us we appreciated how you managed to provide your leadership for this winter meeting and last years summer meeting in addition to all your irrigation association responsibilities. Thank you and to your association for their support. Please accept this plaque as a token of our appreciation of you.

I am thrilled and honoured to be standing here as your 2019 Chair of the NAW Association Executives Council. I would like to acknowledge Bob Weidner for the kind words he said about me when I was introduced as Chair elect at last years winter meeting. I have been participating in the NAW AEC meetings for about 20 years and I am proud to call you all colleagues and friends. Friends who are always willing to share, no matter what. I look forward to a great year of working and serving with you.

I would like to recognize and thank past AEC Chairs for their significant contributions and the support that they have provided me leading up to new role. Please stand and be recognized:

Tim Buche, Chris Jahn, Bob Weidner, Trish Lilly, Nancy Cueroni, Toby Mack, Talbot Gee, and our newest Past Chair Deborah Hamlin. Thank you!

I would like to share with you something about me, about my country of Canada, and what NAW means to me:

About me:

a) I joined the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating in 1988 as a program manager;

b) I succeeded my predecessor Ed Hardison as President & GM in 2002; and

c) I love hockey and my Toronto Maple Leafs;

Fun facts about Canada:

a) Yes it is cold. It was -15f when I left. However the good news is that we have 4 seasons;

b) Canadians consume more Kraft macaroni and cheese dinners than any nation in the world;

c) Our population is 36 million, it is the second largest country in world but only .5% of the worlds population;

d) Canada only officially became an independent country in 1982;

e) Basketball was invented by a Canadian;

f) The largest non militarized border in the world lies between Canada and the United States; and

g) Our official sports are hockey and lacrosse;

About NAW and what it means to me:

a) NAW exits to provide learning opportunities . It is my personal annual career development opportunity;

b) NAW exists to provide knowledge and research;

c) NAW exists to bring members together to interact and share ideas through forums such as these. An through these forums learning that communication breeds understanding and understanding leads to better appreciation of each other. With our ultimate goal to exchange knowledge , together to anticipate the future and to work together with a vision to be the best we can be.

d) And NAW exists to provide meaningful advocacy at the local and national level.

All this is accomplished through a great team at NAW! Thank you! and thank you to Ann Arnott for leading this excellent Winter Planning Committee as Chair."
