CIPH Submission to CUSMA Consultations

October 30, 2024   (0 Comments)

The CIPH has submitted its recommendations to Global Affairs Canada on its recent CUSMA consultations. The Canada - United States – Mexico Agreement (CUSMA – or the USMCA to Americans) is scheduled for formal review in 2026 and Global Affairs Canada has begin consulting to understand the priorities and realities of the current economy.

CIPH’s submission to the CUSMA consultations highlights the need for harmonization of technical standards and certifications between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Currently, inconsistent product standards across these countries create barriers to trade, drive up operational costs, and slow product innovation. CIPH recommends prioritizing the alignment of standards in key areas such as product safety, energy efficiency, and environmental impact. Harmonized standards would streamline cross-border trade, reduce compliance costs, and enable manufacturers to introduce products more efficiently, enhancing their competitiveness in North America.

Should the next version of CUSMA continue establishing cross-border standards, CIPH will continue positioning the plumbing and heating industry to succeed across North American market, while contributing to the goals of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
