On July 4, 2017, Toronto City Council passed it’s “TransformTO initiative”, which sets long term goals and necessary measure to realize a low-carbon Toronto in 2050 that achieves an 80% reduction in Greenhous gas emissions against 1990 levels. The initiative will impact a wide range of sectors with GHG reduction goals for the building, transportation and waste management sectors.

For the building sector, all new buildings must be built to zero GHG emissions by 2030, and existing buildings will be retrofitted to achieve a 40% energy performance improvement.  There are also goals of reaching 75% of community wide energy use to utilize renewable or low-carbon sources, and 30% of total floor space to be connected to low-carbon thermal energy by 2050.
