In 2016 CIPH created the Water Wise Award as a way of recognizing those outside our membership who are doing important work with regards to water conservation, stewardship, education and beyond. Our goal was to highlight these important organizations and to hopefully use this recognition as opportunities to expand our network of aligned organizations who seek to preserve, protect and provide clean safe access to WATER…our most precious natural resource.

Over the course of the last year and half this award has been presented to WaterAid, for its efforts in providing access to water and sanitation in developing countries; the Vancouver Aquarium for its amazing educational programs and innovative physical plant and le Fonds Éco IGA for making simple water saving technology available to thousands of homes in Quebec.  All of these organizations are different and all are having a measurable impact.

With our most recent presentation we have recognized yet another type of organization in the Marine Institute of Memorial University.
Initially named the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics, it was established back in 1964 and evolved over time to become the Marine Institute of today - Canada’s most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research and industrial support for ocean industries. It is also one of the most respected centres of marine learning and applied research anywhere in the world, representing Canada’s leadership in this important area of study.

While CIPH members focus on the efficient and safe distribution of water to Canadian homes and businesses, the students and faculty of the Marine Institute observe and study oceans and fisheries with a focus on their long-term health and sustainability. Their unique approach includes traditional academic study but also joint industry programs that help educate related businesses and develop technologies that will assure the vitality of our oceans for generations.

CIPH was thrilled to recognize the Marine Institute and presented this award on Wednesday September 20th in front of a room of industry members at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s. The presentation was made by CIPH Chairman of the Board Joe Senese to Kimberly Robertson of the Marine Institute.

CIPH Hopes that this recognition will open up doors to future collaborations between the Marine Institute and local members moving forward.
